Pachyderm Pals at Hope Elephants in Hope, Maine!

hope elephant 015

Meet Rosie and Opal, two Asian Elephants that were rescued from the circus after 40+ years of “service.” Having needs for extensive medical care, it was quite the blessing that they ended up in the quiet little town of Hope, Maine. Thank Dr. Jim Laurita and his brother Tom for that.

Jim, a circus veterinarian who worked with Rosie, eventually left the circus life to come back to Maine full time, but told his pal Rosie that he would be back for her. That’s exactly what happened. Shortly thereafter, Opal, another stellar Circus performer, was rescued as well. When these 4 ton pachyderms arrived (think “Ants Go Marching..”,) it was quite the shock in the quiet town of Hope. Jim and Tom went to work!

Getting things “back to normal” for this pair has been challenging to say the least, but the facility, the team of professional caretakers, volunteers, and a great board of directors has helped the process every step of the way. They now get full time care, physical therapy, and plenty of attention from visitors that have come from all walks of life.

Whether you’re here for vacation, a family get together, or a Holiday break, the retreat for Rosie and Opal is quite the sight to see. They are available to visit, but you must call or write first. Find the information below, and tell them that the Blue Harbor House sent you!
